Jean stepped back from her place beside me at the "King's Table" in Yamasoukro, Ivory Coast, to get this picture.
Jean and I dined on and drank from gold. President Felix Houphet Boigny entertained us lavishly--including expensive personal gifts of ivory and gold. We felt out of place and thought about the Biblical kings' tables.
When we first arrived a rather self-important American told us we must sit in the back of the room, but that he would be at the head table. Like a page out of the Bible, a Presidential representative came and moved Jean and me to a place at the head table--and told our arrogant friend that he had to sit where he told us to sit.
What a lesson!
